Hi everyone. It's me Tommy!
I've had an amazing week. Let me tell you what happened!
Remember last week when my arm was itchy and I got my first flower? Well this entire week I was feeling itchy!
One morning when I woke up, there was a tiny round green bump coming out of one of my flowers! I yelled out to my mom Laura and my dad Scott. They both ran over to me and said, "Congratulations Tommy! You just got your first tomato!"
I learned that day, as a tomato plant, my purpose in life is to grow tomatoes!
Take a look at the picture below.
See my tomatoes! I'm so happy producing tomatoes is my purpose.
My dad said because of the way I'm raised here at Beylik Family Farms, I'm able to grow some of the best tomatoes in the world!
I'm so lucky to have parents that feed me nutritious food, make sure I get plenty of sunshine, and sing me to sleep every night so I get a good night's rest.
My dad told me some people call tomatoes vegetables and other people call them fruit.
He said if your a scientist, you call tomatoes fruit because fruits are developed from an ovary in the base of a flower and they contain the seeds of the plant. That's technically what makes tomatoes a fruit.
My dad said people who like to cook with tomatoes refer to them as vegetables because they're used in savory rather than sweet recipes. The term vegetable is generally used to describe edible parts of plants such as cabbage leaves or celery stalks.
My mom said we should take a close up picture of my first tomato for her scrapbook.
See the picture below?
My mom said she is so proud of me for producing such a beautiful first tomato.
My mom said my tomatoes will start growing bigger and eventually turn bright red!
I asked my mom why my tomatoes will turn red. She said because our house is kept at the perfect temperature for me to produce something called lycopene, carotene, and ethylene. Lycopene, carotene, and ethylene make my tomatoes turn red and taste delicious!
My mom and dad are so smart! They know everything about raising my brothers and sisters and I.
Sorry everyone! I'd love to tell you more about my tomatoes but my dad needs to talk to me.
He said now that I'm a teenager, he needs to tell me about the birds and the bees. I told him I know what birds and bees are. For some reason he laughed and said we still need to talk.
See you all next week!
Tommy.
